The USA Today High School Defensive Player of the Year justified the hoopla by starting the 2011 Gamecocks opener and going on to finish in the school's top three for tackles for loss (47.0) and sacks (24.0). As a sophomore, Clowney was the program's first defensive consensus All-America player.
