One of the greatest backs ever produced at North Texas State, a school which has gained consider able renown for producing topflight professionals, Abner Haynes was the Missouri Valley Conference's "Back of the Year" in both 1958 and 1959. A quick, elusive running back, 1890 yards on 347 carries, Haynes excelled also as a receiver, 46 receptions for 579 yards, and as a defender. He scored a total of 158 points during his three seasons at North Texas.



Despite his huge size, Jim has great agility and speed. His greatest thrill in pro football came against the New York Jets when he scored a touch- down after blocking a field goal attempt. Jim was the #1 draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1963, but he elected to sign with the Buffalo Bills.



The Vikings wound up in the cellar of the Western Division in a tie. They won 4, lost 9 and tied 1, scoring. 292 points to their opponents' 304. They led the NFL with 551 rushing attempts and a whopping 70 yard punt.
