Gene fits all the requirements that a coach would desire in filling the guard position. He attended Oklahoma University and played there as a sophomore in 1954 when they went undefeated. Hardin-Simmons was fortunate in having Gene for the last two years of his education. From there, he gained pro experience with the Chicago Cardinals. In addition to his many talents on the gridiron, Gene was a member of the Rodeo team at Hardin-Simmons where he competed in the calf-roping and bull-dogging events.
An All-Pro lineman, Dick is one of the most highly regarded players in the NFL. With Dick leading the way, Redskin backs usually find good holes to go through for big gains. He will bowl over anybody who gets in his way with a jolting shoulder block. When the Redskins call for a pass, Dick helps give the quarterback protection by blasting linemen out of the play.
While Simmons has long served as the anchor of the Tennessee defense, he definitely doesn't hold that unit down. Sinking offensive lines with his powerful style of play, the All-Pro tackle elevates his squad with run-stuffing force and quarterback-hunting sacks.
