Intercepted 12 passes in NFL rookie year (1950) to tie for second place in that department. Attended Los Angeles City College in 1946 and 1947, then transferred to Oregon. Played halfback. Had great year in 1949. Intercepted 8 passes, returned them 127 yards. Returned 3 kickoffs for touchdowns. Led Oregon in rushing. Has all that it takes to make a top-notch defensive halfback.
Charles is one of football's real workhorses. The Iron Man played in 80 consecutive ballgames in high school, college and in the A.F.L. before an ankle injury forced him to miss a game. Breaking in with the Patriots as a tackle, Charlie was named to the East All-Star squad in 1962. Now a guard, he may very well become an All-Star selection at his new position in '64.
Attended Rice Institute. On every All-American team in 1946. Voted outstanding lineman and most valuable player in Southwest Conference that year. In College All-Star - Chicago Bears game, 1947. Began pro career with Baltimore Colts. The Browns gave up 5 players to gain his services. Has played offense and defense (center line backer). Now a lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
