New York, NY, May 14, 1993 - Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon, the league blocked-shot leader in three of the last four seasons, has been named the 1993 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. In 1992-93, the 7-0 Nigerian rejected 55 more shots (342) than any other player, led all centers in steals (150) and was second in defensive rebounds (785). He captured 74% of the possible votes.
Walker, who scored the second-most points ever by a Celtics' rookie (trailing only Larry Bird), set a 1997-98 NBA season high with 21 field goals in a game against the Wizards.
