When Dirk was growing up in Germany watching the Chicago Bulls on television, he fell in love with the style of game played by Scottie Pippen. Amazingly, Nowitzki now can do many of those same things on the court - but at 7-feet tall. “Dirk is such a freak," Grizzlies assistant coach Lionel Hollins says of the four-time NBA All-Star. "This guy is 7-foot and plays like a guard."
Started pro cage career with Chicago Stags during 1946-47 season and was named most valuable player on championship outfit. At beginning of 1947-48 season Lakers purchased his contract for $15.000 - biggest deal in history of pro basketball. During college days at Minnesota Don was twice an all-conference selection. A knee injury at end of last season forced him to miss most of the play-offs and World Pro tournament.
Entering the 1994-95 season, Johnson enjoyed a reputation as a capable point guard. Entering 1995-96, he now finds himself unmistakably crucial to the Spurs' success. He must use his intelligence and skill to lift the Spurs a level.
