A member of The Sporting News ABA All-Star second team for 1970-71, Mack is a small man who made his mark fast in a big man's game. He was the ABA's 4th leading scorer while finishing 2nd to Bill Melchionni in assists last season. Mack became a scorer as well as a ballhandler as a rookie, guiding the Stars to the playoffs against Indiana. He made the ABA All-Rookie team while averaging 5.69 assists per game.
There are forwards with higher scoring averages than Willie, but when all phases of the game are considered - defense, rebounding, percentage shooting and completely controlling the tempo of the game, Willie is tops. Willie was signed by the Stars after a tryout in 1969.
One of the things that is lost because of his fabulous playmaking skills is the fact that Stockton is a terrific three-point shooter. He finished fifth in three-point field goal percentage last season (.449). Opponents try not to lose track of Stockton after he passes the basketball because he has the knack of showing up behind the three-point arc for the trey.
