Changed spelling of his first name from "Akeem" in March to reflect the original Arabic spelling...Led NBA in rebounding and blocked shots in 1990, the second player ever to do so...Named to All-NBA First Team three straight years (1987-89).

Extremely nimble for a man his size, Longley paced the New Mexico Lobos in scoring (19.1) PPG) and rebounding (9.2 RPG) as a senior, and set a school record with 117 blocks as a junior.
