Spencer took the ABA by storm in 1969-70, gaining All-League, and All-Rookie team honors and being named MVP and Rookie of the Year. He led the ABA in scoring and rebounding, setting new league marks in all but the points per game category. As a member of the West team in the ABA All-Star Game that year, he gained MVP honors by scoring 23 points and by grabbing 19 rebounds.
A versatile athlete from Omsk, Russia, Volkov's deft passing and size were missed by the Hawks last season when he was sidelined with injuries to both wrists. He was MVP of the Soviet Union in 1989, placing ahead of Golden State's Sarunas Marciulionis.
