One of the original NBA franchises, the Atlanta Hawks have called six cities home. The team started as the Tri-City Blackhawks, splitting time between the Illinois towns of Moline and Rock Island as well as Davenport, lowa. The name shrunk to Hawks when the team moved to Milwaukee in 1951. After a move to St. Louis in 1955, the Hawks settled in Atlanta in 1968. DID YOU KNOW? Since the introduction of the three-point shot in 1979-80, the 1979-80 Hawks are the only NBA team to average less than one three-point attempt per game. The Hawks set the NBA single-season record by forcing their opponents to commit 24.1 turnovers per game in 1977-78. SCORECARD. In a March 17, 1956, showdown with the Minneapolis Lakers, the St. Louis Hawks set the NBA Playoff record for free throws in a regulation game with 54.
A strong candidate for Rookie-of-the-Year honors, the supposedly defense-oriented Mutombo is the team's leading scorer (18.9 PPG) and placed third in the league in rebounding (13.8 RPG) in early January. A Rookie-of-the-Month Award winner. Mutombo still fills the lane in imposing fashion, averaging 2.7 blocks per game.
