John did everything at lowa. He set school all-time highs for points in one game with 49, in one season with 699, point average with 27.9 and in career field goal shooting percentage with 59.9%. John was named to the All-Big Ten team and to numerous All-America teams in his senior year. "JJ." was a prep All-American and a junior college All-American and was invited to the 1968 Olympic tryouts.

Originally based in New York as the Buffalo Braves, the franchise traveled from coast to coast to settle in San Diego as the Clippers for the 1978-79 season.
