It was Freddy Lindstrom, former big leaguer, who brought Paul into the circles of organized ball. Freddy was managing Knoxville in 1941, and he was impressed with Paul's work in semi-pro circles in New Castle, Pa. Paul didn't get into much action with Knoxville, but the next season with Elizabethton he had an 18-2 record and worked 18 complete games. He was with the Dodgers in the Fall of 1946. The Cubs purchased him from Brooklyn.
In the '51 stretch drive, Clem came up to the Dodgers from St. Paul and won 4 straight, lost 1 and came back to shut out the Giants in the 2nd playoff game. The Dodgers signed him right from high school where Clem was an All-State (R.I.) Pitcher, striking out 160 men in 10 games. He broke in with Newport News in '44, was an Army Paratrooper in '45 and '46 and had a brief trial with the Dodgers in '50.
Del marked in 1950 his first full season on the roster of a major league club. The powerful young backstopper (now with the armed forces) gave evidence of becoming one of the top catchers of the NL. He appeared in 79 games. Drove in 37 runs on a total of 56 hits. The Braves brought Del up to the majors in mid-season, 1949. He had started the campaign with Evansville, Three-I league.
