The "Mad Monk" is one of Russ' nicknames. He's a good pitcher who came to the Dodgers from the Phillies in a big three way trade early in 1953. Russ has trouble controlling his temper, although he succeeded in holding it in check quite well the past season. Russ was in 34 games for the Dodgers in 1953, and he won 15 and lost but 5. You can see that his work on the mound was a help in bringing the Dodgers their second straight pennant.
