Jorge, one of the top players ever from Puerto Rico, was up and down with the Yankees for 3 years and often platooned for 2 more before he began a 4-year string of All- Star and Silver Slugger Award-winning seasons. His top campaigns were in 2001, when he batted .281 with career highs of 30 home runs and 101 runs batted in, and in 2000 (.287-28-86).
Rapidly developing into one of the most dependable relief pitchers in the N.L., "Bobo" has the ability to effectively snuff out enemy rallies. When Bob returned from Service in '53, few thought he was ready for the Majors. But Bob's sparkling performances in Spring Training won him a permanent berth on the Brooks. He helped the Dodgers cop the '53 pennant.
In '46, Bob made his pro baseball debut as a pitcher. He won 18 and lost 9 for Elizabethton and also played the outfield, batting .384 in 114 games. His hitting so impressed Cub officials that he was converted into an outfielder. Bob was brought up to the Cubs in '50 after leading the Southern Association in Batting with a .376 average. He hit .273 in 85 games for the Cubs in 1950. In October, 1951, Bob was traded to the Reds by the Cubs.
