The rookie righthander was a pleasant surprise for the A's in 1965. Signed to a Kansas City contract in 1964, Jim didn't pitch in a pro ballgame until last season. His debut was delayed because of an operation for the removal of buckshot in his leg. Quickly rounding into shape, the 18 year old became a big favorite of the fans in Kansas City. Jim was a star athlete in his North Carolina high school, winning letters in baseball, football and track.
"Eddie has been pitching in the American League since 1930 and has ranked with the best. This Spring he complained of a lame arm, and went to his home in South Carolina to rest, but is expected to be back with the Chicago team before the close of the season. Durham broke into the American League with the Boston team and starred with a second division outfit. He was traded to the White Sox at the close of the 1932 season. Last year, pitching for Chicago, a sixth place club, he won 10 games and lost 6. Eddie is 25 years old, 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and weighs 150 pounds. Bats left-handed, but throws right-handed."
In 1965, Pete led the National League in total hits and established himself as one of the game's top hitters. Despite an injured thumb last season, Pete topped all major leaguers as he pasted the ball at a solid .335 clip.
