In his 1st year in pro ball, Johnny hit .359 and clouted 35 homers for Muskegon. The Tigers called him up in the middle of the '42 season and after 3 years in the Service he returned to Detroit. "Skids" spent '47 at Dallas and in '48 became the regular Tiger shortstop until traded to the Red Sox in '52.
