Won 4 and lost 3 for Braves in 1950. In a total of 19 contests. Spotted by scouts for Boston while pitching for the Waltham, Mass., High School. Signed on graduation. With Pawtucket in 1947, winning 6, losing 1, and compiling an earned run average of 1.96. Had 10-6 record for Milwaukee in 1948. With the Braves in spring of 1949, but returned to Milwaukee. there again, May 1951.
Joined Pirates as free agent just before spring training. It is his fifth National League club. Has hit 154 major league homers in career that began with Cardinals in 1940. Best year was 1947 when he hit 35 homers and drove in 122 runs on average of .305. Hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in single game in 1949.
The 1916 Sporting News M101-4 and M-101-5 sets were released only a few years after the famed tobacco card sets produced by the American Tobacco Company.
