Officially purchased from American Association April 11, 1953 after working full schedule of National League Grapefruit League games on trial... had fling as pitcher in 1939, appeared in 18 games with Salem-Roanoke of Virginia League... also appeared briefly that year with South Boston of Bi-State League... entered umpiring profession in class-D Evangeline League in 1948... advanced to class-B Tri-State League in 1949 and jumped to American Association in August, 1951... born 1920, Mount Vernon Springs, N. C.
With the crack of the bat, Dick is moving to scoop up the ball and convert a hit into an out. For the second straight year he was among the leaders in Total Chances, Putouts and Assists for shortstops. A great all-around, natural athlete, Dick went to Duke University where he starred in basketball, and was All American for scoring over 23 points a game. He signed a bonus contract in 1952.
Being sent to the Minors is "bad luck" for most players but it was just the opposite for Frank in '50. After a poor season with the Cubs in '49 he blasted Pacific Coast hurling and topped the League with a startling .379 Batting Average. He learned determination in the Minors and has been a top-notch outfielder since '51. In '52 he placed 2nd in N.L. Batting with a torrid .325.
