Debs Garms, an all-around athlete at Howard Payne College, of Brownwood, Tex., started his professional baseball career with the Abilene Club, of the West Texas League, as an infielder. In 1932 he was given a tryout with the St. Louis Browns, with whom he played until the beginning of the 1935 season, when he was sent to San Antonio. In 1936, while with San Antonio, Garms acquired a batting average of .315 and on the strength of this batting record was drafted by the Boston Bees in 1937. During the 1938 season Debs Garms was a member of the Boston Bees, hitting better than 300, with a batting average of .315. He was one of the leading outfielders of the National League. in 1938, making only two errors. His 6-year major-league record shows 429 hits, out of 455 games, for a batting average of .291.
What a ball player! One of the best hitters in the National League, one of the fastest runners and can go and get 'em in the outfield. Three times he led the league in base stealing. Cuyler is playing his sixth season with the Cubs, after four seasons with the Pirates. Last year hit .291 in 110 games and fielded .968. Lives in Harrisville, Mich., where he was born in 1899. Is five feet, 10 1⁄2 inches tall and tips the scales at 180 pounds. Bats and throws right-handed.

Served 2 years in the armed forces.
