Jim had an off season appointment at Fenway Park and was late. "If you want him to get here," a team official suggested, "just throw a ball into the outfield and he'll show up to catch it." That's a story that illustrates Jim's really superior fielding. Boston fans have become used to seeing him make near impossible catches, and he has earned the title of the best fielding outfielder in the game today. He batted .272 for 151 games in 1953.
