Starting in the minors in 1942, and spending 3 years in Military Service, Joe made the Cardinals in 1946. He hit only .237 for the season in '46, but in 5 World Series games batted .316. Sent down to Columbus in '48, Joe hit .356 and was recalled by the Cards. In '49 he had a .261 mark and in 1950, he was batting .347 when he hurt his shoulder. Joe finished '50 with 318, and caught 34 games without an error. He was traded to the Pirates in 1951.
