"Bake" broke into organized ball with Mayfield of the Kitty League in '38. He got his first trial in the majors in 1943 with the Browns after hitting .326 at San Antonio in '42. With the White Sox from '45 to '51, his best batting mark was .317 in '50. "Bake" led American League 3rd Basemen in Fielding in '49 with .978. That year, he tied a major league mark for 3rd Basemen by taking part in 3 double plays in 1 game. The Senators bought him in October, 1951.



Pitched no-hit, no-run game for a minor league club in 1924 as Manager Branch Rickey, of the Cardinals, sat in the stand. Had pitched the day before, but Rickey wanted to see him work, so was put in again. Pitched five years for Cardinals. Spent year in the minors, then came back. Sold to Philadelphia in 1932. A right-hander, 6 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs 180 pounds. Has plenty of smoke. Born in Rhems, S. C., in 1902. Last year won 15 and lost 9. Graduate of Clemson A. and M. College, where he starred in pitching.
