MY FAVORITE BASEBALL MEMORIES by Richie Ashburn. My greatest thrill was first walking in Connie Mack Stadium on opening day in 1948, my first year in the majors. The most exciting game I've been in was the last one in 1950. That was when Dick Sisler hit a three-run homer to beat the Dodgers and win a pennant for us. The greatest fielding play I've ever seen was Snider's catch of Jones' fly ball off the wall in Connie Mack Stadium, saving a game for Brooklyn. It was so good I still don't believe he caught it.
A two-time Opening Day starter, Jack signed with the Tigers in December 2023. "He's extraordinarily talented," team executive Scott Harris says, "and we were really excited to add this caliber of talent."
It was Paul Derringer, unsuccessful in two previous World Series, who came through last year for the Cincinnati Reds to outpitch Buck Newsom in that seventh and deciding game of the 1940 classic. Paul won two of those important four games necessary for the world's title and it was his great pitching during the season that helped bring the Reds to their second straight pennant. For the third consecutive year. Derringer won 20 or more games - 20 in 1940, while yielding only 48 bases on balls in 297 innings to prove once again that he is one of the greatest control pitchers in baseball. It was also Paul who was credited with the National League triumph over the American in the 1940 All-Star game. allowing only 1 hit in two innings and striking out three.
