One of the early pitching surprises of the 1940 season was young "Chubby" Dean, of the Athletics. Never able to complete a game. in three seasons of pitching with the A's, Dean beat the World Champion Yankees in his first two attempts this season, shutting them out once, and allowing only 1 run the next time. He is a hitting pitcher, starting with the A's as a first baseman in 1936, direct from Duke University. His duties with the Athletics include pinch-hitting. He appeared in 80 games last year, batting .351, driving in 19 runs on 27 hits.
After spending part of the season at Milwaukee, Ray went to Toledo last year where he won 7 Games. A tremendously talented hurler, his fine curve ball keeps the hitters guessing and his sneaky fast ball is just as hard to hit. Starting in Baseball in '49, he won 12 Games at Hartford in 1951 and posted a 2.38 E.R.A. at Jacksonville in '53 with 19 Wins to gain a Big League trial.
One of the top winners on Braves' staff in 1972, Ron was the only Braves' player ever selected to play in an All-Star game as a rookie. He retired the only two batters he faced in the 1968 classic.
