A team, they say, is as strong as its reserves, and one of the reasons why Brooklyn finished third last year was young Johnny Hudson. Hudson, who plays either short, third or second, stepped in when called on and came through. He has been with Brooklyn, on and off, since 1936, and while not a house-on-fire with a bat, has always proved a dangerous man to whom to pitch. Last year, he drove in thirty-two runs for the Dodgers, and thirty-seven the year before. He is a fast, agile fielder, no matter what position he plays, and although he may ride the bench a lot, the fact that he is on hand in case of need is a happy thought for Manager Leo Durocher.
Traded to the Senators this spring, Tom was one of the White Sox' best pinch-hitters in '53 with a .379 Slugging Mark. He led the American Assn. in Batting with .368 at Louisville in '49 and the Carolina League with .380 at Durham in '46. Tom hit .318 in 54 games for the Red Sox in 1950. He was traded to the Browns in '51 and to the White Sox in '52.
