Jerry suffered a broken foot in May 2003, which ended up costing him half the year. He was leading the Orioles by batting .287 at the time of the injury. A threat on the bases, he first played for the club in 1998. His career-best 29 steals came in 2001, when he also drove in his career-high 47 runs. His father, Jerry Sr., also was an Orioles player.
The best young lefty in baseball, Curt had an accident in 1953 that could have been much more serious than it was. His foot slipped and was caught in a power mower. Only the fact that he was wearing heavy Army shoes prevented serious injury. He was out of action for a good bit of time toward the end of the season. Had a 16-13 record. Curt was on his way to 20 wins in 1950 when he was called up for military service at 17.
Gil Hodges played in his first game as a Dodger back in 1943 and he didn't hang up his spikes until the middle of the 1963 campaign. In a career which spanned two decades, Gil cracked 370 home runs and compiled a lifetime batting average of .273. The powerful first baseman had his best season in 1954 when he batted .304 and clouted 42 home runs. The Washington Senators' skipper holds the National League record for grand slam home runs - 14. Mr. Hodges tied a major league record in 1950 when he slammed four home runs in a ballgame vs. the Braves. One of the most popular men in baseball, Gil is the epitome of courage, good sportsmanship and integrity in America's favorite pastime.
