Joe did a nice job for the Athletics in 1953. Appeared in 111 games and hit .255. He drove in 57 runs with his 107 hits. Nickname is "Oats." He was playing Legion and prep ball around his native San Francisco when he was spotted by scouts. Broke in with El Paso in 1947. He was with the Chicago White Sox in 1951 and the Brownies got him in a big player deal in November of 1951. The Athletics acquired him for 1953.
Billy established himself as a first-line Major League pitcher in '52, his first full season in the N.L. His E.R.A. tied him for 4th place in the League and his own error was the main reason for his loss of the 6th game of the World Series affer 8 1/3 innings of effective pitching. After season of Minor League ball in which he won 16 while losing only 5, Billy joined the Dodgers in '50 but didn't see much action. He was in the Service in '51.
Hank returned in 1950 to the American League where his major league career began. In 13 games for the Tigers, mostly in relief. Had a 1-1 record, with earned run average of 3:27. With Yanks in rookie year, 1942. Sent to Cubs during 1945 season. Record was 10-5 for New York, 11-2 for Chicago. This tied a big-league pitching mark of 21 wins in season split between an AL and a NL team.
