Name that player!

A player who went through the entire 1946 season without making an error. Last year he caught 102 games, hit .259 and continued his superior fielding. He spent five years in the minors, joining the New York Yankees in 1939. In 1942, he went to the Cleveland Indians and in 1945 was traded to the Athletics to put up a performance that makes him one of the country's No. 1 players. Off-season he's a policeman.

Emerson Dickman, one of the most promising young hurlers in the American League, was a student at Washington & Lee College before entering professional baseball. He pitched for Little Rock in 1937 and won 16 games for them, losing only 8. On the strength of this record he was recalled by the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 1937 season, and was used by them last year chiefly in relief roles. During 1938 he pitched 38 games for the Red Sox, winning 5, and losing 5.

The nickname "Babe" was tagged onto Gordon Phelps because of his power with a bat. Numerous injuries last year, kept "Babe" out of action quite a bit last year but he managed to catch 98 games for the Dodgers, and his .285 batting average, although be- low his par, was good enough to bring across 42 runs. Babe was a bargain for the Dodgers, who picked him up from the Chicago Cubs in 1934 for the waiver price of $7500. He has since been a chief cog in the Brooklyn machine and it wasn't until last year that he failed to hit .300 or better for them. The Babe was voted to the National League All-Star team last year and in his only appearance, walked as a pinch-hitter.
