Pete is one of the real veterans of the Philadelphia Athletics. He has been with the team since they drafted him in October 1940. During those years he has played at second, third and short. Pete had his best season with the Athletics in 1953, batting .286 for 115 games, his highest average since 1940. He had 130 hits and drove in 35 runs. In 1950 Pete took part in five double plays at second base, tying a major league record.
Howie has been a member of the White Sox longer than any other player on the team. He came up to the Sox in 1948 from Waterloo, where he won 16 and lost 8 in 1947, his second year in organized ball. A former University of Illinois star, he had a 4-5 record in 1948 and the following year he won only 1 game, while losing 14. Howie was used mostly in relief in 1950 and posted a 2-3 record. He had his best major league season in 1951 and is improving steadily.
