One of the outstanding finds of the 1951 season. A fleet- footed outfielder who can swing a mean bat. About a month after the opening of the '51 campaign, Jim was hitting .359. His season's average was .283. He stole 26 bases. Attended Texas Christian on football scholarship.
Joe was on the Houston roster, when the Cardinals looked him over in '51 spring training. They decided he was ready for the majors and his rookie record proves it. In 1950 at Houston, he won 16 games for a last place team and led the Texas League in Strikeouts (165) and Complete Games (21). 1948 was Joe's first full year in pro ball and he had a 16-8 mark. At Omaha in '49, he won 14 and struck out 142.
Lowder can quiet an offense using his sizzling heater, baffling changeup or filthy slider, and foes had a historically tough time scoring against him in 2024.
