Sammy is a highly regarded prospect, and was one of the best rookies in the league in 1952. He first appeared in spring training for the Red Sox in 1950, and made quite an impression on the Boston front office. He played three years for the University of Washington before he signed with Seattle in 1949. He hit .302 for them in 60 games and was purchased by the Red Sox.

Bothered by arm trouble in '53, Carl slipped from his fine '52 record of 11 wins in 18 decisions. He joined the Athletics in '43 when he was 16 years old without any previous pro baseball experience. In '48, he won 14 games and played 52 games as an outfielder hitting .298.

Johnny tied a Big League record in 1942, by becoming 1 of the 16 players in the history of baseball to get more than 200 hits in his first year. The Red Sox brought him up after he was voted the Most Valuable Player in the American Association in 1941. He led the American League in Hits in '46 and 47 and was the shortstop on the Major League All-Star Team in '42 and '46. During the War he served as a Navy Lieutenant.
