Then back to the minors for a couple seasons. With the Cards for keeps, beginning with 1943. Won 3 games in the 1946 World Series - a record for lefties. Had a great year, 1948. Won 20, while losing only 7. Had 2.24 E.R.A.
The Sox received a big present from Uncle Sam last winter when Dick was discharged from service. He figures to play a big part in the Boston drive for the '55 Pennant. Starting at Marion in '51 he won 21 games and led the League with a 2.60 E.R.A. At Louisville the next year his 7-1 record by mid-season won him a Bosox promotion and he chalked up a fine 5-5 Won-Lost mark.
Cincinnati obtained Alex from the St. Louis Cardinals on January 11, 1968 for Dick Simpson. In his first year with the Reds, Alex was sensational. He finished second on the club in batting, triples and stolen bases.
