Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner, younger brother of "Big Poison" Paul Waner, has the unique distinction of being the best one-base hitter in the National League. Of the 2,263 hits he has made as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1927, 1,850 were singles. In his first year with the Bucs, 198 of his 223 hits were one-baggers, a new modern National League mark. Opposing pitchers will tell you that Lloyd is one of the hardest men to get out in the league. Last year, Lloyd played 112 games for the Pirates, batting .285, his lowest average in five years. His lifetime major league batting mark is .321, which is pretty tall hitting for a little fellow. He is one of the best defensive outfielders in the National League.

Tony Lazzeri coming to the bat in his first world series with bases filled, struck out. He has more than made up for that failure in the years since that time. Considered most dangerous batter on the Yankees and a fine second baseman. Last year he hit for .300 in 141 games and fielded .978. Lazzeri is 28 years of age. He is five feet, 10 1/2 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He bats and throws right-handed. He was bought by the Yankees from Salt Lake City in 1926.

The most publicized ball-player of World War II, the "Hondo Hurricane" became a Giant in 1947. Clint had so much talent that they didn't know where to play him. He pitched, played first base and the outfield and finally remained an outfielder at the end of 1950. In 4 seasons as a pitcher, he had a 29-29 record. At the plate, he hit .309 in '47 and .302 in '50. In March of 1952 he was optioned to Minneapolis to get more experience in the outfield.
