Fielding Tips - Playing Ground Balls. "Sparky" Adams, third baseman of the Cincinnati Reds is one of the smartest infielders in the game. No man has a surer pair of hands on ground drives, "partly because "Sparký" plays the ball carefully to get it on a good bounce and largely because he gets a flying start by watching the spot that his pitcher is delivering the ball to the plate. Right hand hitters usually hit outside balls to the right and inside balls to the left, so that "Sparky" is always "leaning" with the pitch. Do not "fight" the ball, or rush in on it. Play the ball, never let it play you.
Manuel had not pitched at a level higher than Class A when 2006 began, but after posting a combined 0.99 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A in the early part of the season, he made his Major League debut on July 28. The slender Panamanian with the mid-90s fastball proved effective in the Rockies pen with a 3.62 ERA in his 35 1/3 innings pitched.
The 1951 season was Early's best in majors up to present time. He got into 37 games, winning 20, losing 13. His 3.02 earned run average led Indian hurlers, and was 3rd best in league. He paced the AL in innings pitched (274), and in games started. Stood 2nd in strikeouts (133).
