In 2021, Joe became just the second pitcher since 1901 to throw at least five innings and allow three or fewer hits in each of his first four Major League outings. The heater-heavy righty spun seven scoreless, one-hit frames for his initial win on September 8.
Though they lost the pennant to the Giants in '51, Chuck's Dodger team won more ball games (97) than any Dodger team since '42. He started his playing career with Moline in 1919 and finished with the Giants in '33. Chuck managed Nashville in 1932-33-34-38, Cincinnati from the end of '34 through '37 and Oakland in '49 and '50. He was on the Dodger coaching staff from '39 to '46 and the Yankee staff in '47 and '48.
Ned is a great young pitcher. He worked in 30 games for the Tigers during the course of the 1953 season, and his record was 11-11. He could probably be a big winner if he had a better hitting team behind him. In 1951 with the St. Louis Browns, a weak hitting team, he nevertheless managed to win 20 games, losing 12. His 20 wins represented the largest portion of the Brownies' victories. Began in 1944 and came to the Browns in 1948. Traded to Detroit in 1952.
