Just before signing a big league contract, John pitched for the University of Missouri. In 1959, the hurler allowed three earned runs all season. Traded to Indians for Ralph Terry April 1966.

He joined the Phillies in '48, after batting .312 (1945) and .362 (1947) at Utica. 1946 was spent in Military Service. In 1948, Richie hit .333 for the Phils and was "Rookie of the Year". He also led the League in Stolen Bases (32). One of the fastest men in Baseball, he hit .284 in '49 and .303 in 1950.
