Pedro was drafted by California in 1968 from Tulsa. He spent the entire 1969 season with the Angels except for being sidelined with an appendectomy. Strictly a relief pitcher, he was the winner in his first major league appearance vs. Seattle April 9, and later defeated Baltimore. Pedro was acquired by Cincinnati during the winter to beef up their bullpen.
After last year's All-Star game, Bill was the hottest hitting Yankee. The fleet-footed outfielder came to New York in exchange for 3rd baseman Clete Boyer before the 1967 season began.
There are legendary stories about Willie's hitting when he was playing ball around his native South Carolina. There are those who say he batted over .500, and hit well over .400 when he was in the Army. Willie likes to eat chocolate cakes baked by his wife, but he has to forego them during the season to keep his weight at his best playing level.
