Name that player!

Hopped right from the University of California to the big league in 1923. Signed by the Cardinals, but sent to minors for experience. Won a big league berth in 1926. Right-hand batter and thrower, 32 years old. Just short of the six-foot mark in height and weighs 175 pounds. Born in Little Rock, Ark., but now lives in California. Traded to Cincinnati in 1931. Three times batted over 300 in big league. Last year hit .243 in 96 games, fielded .985 in outfield. He sells insurance during the Winter months.

This is "Russ" Bauers' fifth season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He came up from Knoxville in 1936 without any blare of trumpets, and has proved a valuable man on the Pirate staff. He has a good fast ball, and has won 28 while losing 24 for the Bucs. His best year was 1937 when he captured thirteen and lost only six. His earned run average is 3.11 and he has whiffed 247 batters in those four years.

Like many players, DiMaggio missed three seasons due to his service in World War II. Returning to Boston in 1946, the veteran looked as good as ever, as he batted .316-the second-highest mark of his career-while playing stellar defense in center field to earn his third All-Star selection for his World Series-bound team.
