Babe Ruth, the "Home Run King", is the greatest hero the game of baseball. His amazing feats of the diamond are almost as well known in far off Japan as in this country. Born in Baltimore in 1894, Babe played the game as a kid, and strange as it seems, he was a catcher. He later became a successful "south- paw" pitcher, but because of his tremendous hitting power, he was converted into an outfielder. His first contract was for $600. Years later, in 1930, he received $80,000 for a single season, the highest salary ever paid a baseball player. He established many records, but is best known for his thundering home runs. His record of sixty in the 1927 season has never been beaten. He has clouted 687 homers during his professional career, forty-two of them coming in the ten world's series which have given the "Sultan of Swat" another record.
