Name that player!

Ethan Allen, Phillies, a Cincinnati boy who went to Cincinnati University and joined the Cincinnati Reds immediatly on graduating. Ethan Allen has, since, played with the Giants and Cardinals before coming to the Phillies in 1934. With a ten year average of .299, despite several years when he was disabled through illness, Allen, at 32, is counted one of the most dangerous hitters in the pinch in the National League, a line driver more than a slugger. A descendent of New England Colonial stock, he was named after the hero of Ticonderoga.

"Pete" began his professional baseball career with the Wheeling Club in 1930. He entered the majors in 1933 with the Detroit Tigers with which team he is now playing.

The 1953 season is not an example of Gil's best in baseball. Injuries prevented him from playing at top form, and permitted him to appear in the Washington line-up only 68 times. It was in both 1950 and 1951 that Gill showed his abilities. He hit .303 for both of those seasons, driving in 50 runs one year and 62 the next. In April 1951 he tied a major league record by hitting two triples in an inning. Gil's a speed boy.
