Al made the grade with the Indians in '53, after spending '51 and '52 in the Service. He played 8 years of amateur ball, including 3 years of high school competition, before turning pro with Batavia in '46. Al hurled for Burlington in '47 and was with Spartanburg the next 2 seasons, turning in a 24-8 record there in '49. At Oklahoma City in '50, he had a 10-7 record.
Growing up in Philadelphia, Piazza benefited from the fact his family had season tickets at Veterans Stadium. His second-row seat gave him a close view of Mike Schmidt hitting more home runs (548) than any other third baseman. That positional dominance struck a chord with Piazza, who went on to launch more longballs (427) than any other catcher.
Ferrell caught in over 100 games a year for 11 years, a total of 1806 games in the majors in addition to over 250 in the minors before starting his major league career with the old St. Louis Browns in 1929. He later went to Boston and Washington, back to St. Louis, and Washington a second time. He caught on six straight all-star teams and in two World Series.
