Mathews' debut season was moving along well, as the hard-hitting third baseman had tallied 22 home runs entering the final weekend. Then came a spectacular Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Putting himself in the national spotlight on Sept. 27, 1952, the Milwaukee masher became his league's first rookie to hammer three home runs in a game.

Ray is certainly one of the biggest catchers in baseball. He got into the Athletics line-up 84 times in 1953, and hit a good .284. His 76 hits batted in 41 runs, and these hits included 14 doubles, 3 triples and 6 homers. Began in the majors with Cleveland and was traded to the Athletics in April 1951 in a three club deal involving many players. Has two nicknames, "Deacon" and "Whip."

Tom led the A.L. and 4 Minor Leagues in Fielding during his 21-year playing career. In '31 with the Red Sox, he topped A.L. Outfielders with a .993 mark and 443 Putouts. He also led the North Dakota League in '23, Southern Assn. in '29, Piedmont in '39 and Interstate in '40. With the A's, he served 2 years as Scout and 3 as Coach before joining Baltimore this season.
