Ancestry German. Hobbies are golf and bowling. Began umpiring in New York-Pennsylvania League in 1936. First year with the American League was 1938 coming from the International League. Star pitcher with the Philadelphia Athletics 1920-1932, winning 27 games in 1922 and 21 games in 1925. Widely accredited as discoverer of the "knuckle ball" pitch. Won 171 games and lost 119 for the Athletics, Pitched in the 1929 and 1931 World Series for Philadelphia, winning two games and losing one. He was All-Star umpire in 1954.
Earl was used almost entirely to relief roles for the Brownies in '52. He didn't pitch in the Majors in '49, '50 and '51, but did quite a bit of relief tossing for the White Sox and Senators in '47, and '48. Earl has been in pro ball since '38. He got into 14 games for the Reds in '45 and had a 15-10 record for Syracuse of the International League in '46. With Oakland, Earl chalked up an 18-8 record in '50 and 16-16 in '51.
Johnny hit .239 for the Phillies for 92 games in 1954. He drove in 28 runs with 62 hits. His hits were good for a total of 91 bases. He's been in organized ball since 1937. His first appearance in the majors was a brief one with the Pirates in 1942. He has also played for the Cardinals, Phillies, Redlegs and Phillies again. In 1946 he led the National League outfielders in putouts with 388.
