Joe is a good catcher, and a nice man to have on your side with a bat in his hands. He appeared in 82 games for the Athletics in 1953, batting a neat .296. He had 24 runs batted in and 15 doubles. Joe played freshman ball at Illinois, then went into the Coast Guard for three years. In 1947 with Savannah of the Sally League he hit .280 and was the league's best fielding catcher. In 1948 with Memphis he hit .352, and again led catchers in fielding.
Before he was acquired by Washington, Bernie had a .318 lifetime batting average against the Senators in D.C. Stadium. The Senators gave up relief ace Ron Kline to obtain Bernie along with Camilo Pascual before the 1967 season began. Last year, the infielder appeared in 87 games for Washington.
