"Billy the Bull" began the 1951 campaign with the Yankees. After appearing in 15 games for them, he was sent to the Cards. In 124 games for the Birds, batting .262. Had 14 homers. Drove in 64 runs. Began in baseball in 1936. In minors until 1943. Joined Yanks at that time.
Don is called "Mandrake the Magician" because of his uncanny ability to hit bad balls. There's no such thing as a "bad ball" to Don. If he feels like it, he'll hit it, and it can travel a long distance, because he's got power. Sprained an ankle in the last playoff game in 1951 and had to sit out the Series.
Manuel had not pitched at a level higher than Class A when 2006 began, but after posting a combined 0.99 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A in the early part of the season, he made his Major League debut on July 28. The slender Panamanian with the mid-90s fastball proved effective in the Rockies pen with a 3.62 ERA in his 35 1/3 innings pitched.
