Gerry is a very valuable man to have around a pitching mound. His last three seasons have been his best since his first two years in-baseball. In 1951 his record was 19-13; in 1952 it was 17-14; and finally in 1953 he won 18 and lost only 9. Gerry began in baseball in 1941 with Boise of the Pioneer League and won 22 games, the most in the league. He also led in games with 39 and innings pitched with 261. He had a 20-10 record for Boise the next year.
One of the most efficient and tireless workers in Baseball, Ellis pitched in the most Red Sox games again last season. In '53 he set the all time American League record by hurling in 69 games. A veteran of 17 seasons in pro ball, Ellis came to Boston after 3 years with St. Louis. He led the A.L. in '49 with the top Won-Lost Pct. while posting 23 Victories and 6 Shutouts.
Ossie Bluege, veteran third baseman of the Washington Senators, is said to have the largest pair of hands in baseball, a great advantage in playing the infield for the reason that a broad palm and long finger makes a larger "basket". Yet many able infielders in the game have small hands and stubby fingers and make up, in quickness of eye and coordination, what they lack in natural baseball hands. Above all pick a glove that is suited to your type of hand and though it may seem stingy, do not lend that glove to other players, who may alter the pocket and spoil its effect for your needs.
