1954 was Frank's first full season in the majors. He had been with the Red Sox for 14 games in 1953, after spending the year with Albany. He had a 1-1 record for the major leaguers. In 1954 he appeared in 36 games, winning 15 and losing 12. His earned run average was a good 3.15, 13th best in the League. Pitched 206 innings and gave up 185 hits and 66 walks. He struck out 124. Began in organized baseball in 1948. His record in 1954 was his best in his baseball career.



Frank E. Smith, pitcher of the Baltimore Federal League team, was born at Pittsburgh, Pa., on October 28, 1879. His first engagement was with the Erie, Pa., team in 1901. The next season found him with the Raleigh team of the Carolina State League. In 1903 he was playing with Birmingham, Ala., of the Southern League, when President Comiskey, of Chicago Americans, drafted him. He pitched with Chicago up to the middle of 1910, when he was traded to Boston Americans. The following season found him in Cincinnati, from which team he went over to the Federal League in 1914.
