Pitchers should never take their full windup with runners on first and second. With runners in these positions, take several looks in their direction to warn them not to take liberties, even throwing once or twice, and then deliver the ball to the batter with a single arm motion. A veteran pitcher like Red Lucas of Cincinnati, will sometimes take a windup with a man on third base, but is always careful to see that he does not try to steal home. In cases where this happens while the pitcher is in the middle of his motion, throw high and toward the batter so that he cannot swing at the ball and must fall away from the plate, thus giving the catcher a chance to tag the runner.
