Signed by the Yankees in 1928 after graduating from Penn. State College. Sent to Hartford for experience, and the next year shifted to St. Paul in the American Association. Won 22 games and lost 17 for a seventh place club in St. Paul in 1932, went back to the Yankees, and has won a regular place. Van Atta is 27 years old, 5 feet, 11 1⁄2 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds. He is a left hander, and in his early pitching days was bothered by lack of control, but overcame this failing.
"Billy the Kid" made a circus catch of a fly ball to save the '52 World Series for the Yanks. A scrappy ball player, Billy has been with the World Champs since the middle of the '50 season but didn't get to play regularly till '52. In his first full year of pro ball in '47, he led the Arizona Texas League for Phoenix with 174 RBI's and a Batting Average of .392. He hit .286 and .280 for Oakland in in 1948 and 1949.
