Pitcher Shota Imanaga was one of the shrewdest free agent signings in the 2024 offseason. He busted out of the gates with a 5-0 record and 0.83 ERA in his first nine starts and anchored a rotation that also included budding workhorse Javier Assad. That strong pitching, along with one of the most prolific offenses in the NL, had the Cubs in the hunt for their first Postseason berth since 2020.
Bill, who played at second and third bases for the Cubs in 1952, appeared in a total of 122 games, hitting .274. He was on his way to a great season in 1951, was batting .333 when he fractured his wrist in a game early in May. Did not appear in the Cubs' line-up the rest of that season. He's been with Chicago since the end of the 1949 season.
Charles Lincoln Herzog, manager of the Cincinnati National League team, was born in Baltimore, Md., July 9, 1885. He began his baseball career at the University of Maryland in 1904. In 1906 he managed a semi-professional team in Ridley, Md. He became a professional in 1907, playing with York and Reading in the Tri-State League. He signed with the New York Giants in 1908, and was traded to Boston in 1910. He was appointed manager of the Cincinnati team December 18, 1913.
